Common Childhood Problems

Cough & Cold in Children: Home Care and When to Seek Help

Young children can get six to eight colds a year — more if they're in daycare or school — and most clear up on their own within a week to ten days. Knowing what's normal helps parents manage the frequent, ordinary cold without unnecessary worry or medication.

What's Normal With a Cold?

A runny or blocked nose, mild cough, sneezing, and a low-grade fever for the first couple of days are all typical. The cough itself can linger for two to three weeks even after other symptoms resolve — this "post-viral cough" is common and doesn't necessarily mean a second infection has started.

Home Care That Actually Helps

Over-the-counter cough and cold medications are generally not recommended for young children — they haven't been shown to work well in this age group and carry some risk of side effects; simple home measures are usually more effective and safer.

When a Cold Might Be Something More

Seek medical attention if there's difficulty breathing or fast breathing, wheezing, a cough that worsens after the first week instead of improving, fever lasting more than 3 days, ear pain (possible ear infection), unusual lethargy, or poor feeding in infants. These can indicate a secondary bacterial infection, pneumonia, or another condition that benefits from evaluation.

Reducing How Often Colds Happen

Frequent colds in young children, especially those in daycare, are largely unavoidable and part of normal immune development — it's rarely a sign of an "immune problem." Handwashing, avoiding close contact with visibly sick people where practical, and staying up to date on vaccinations (including flu vaccine) all help reduce frequency and severity somewhat.
