Growth & Development Assessment: Tracking More Than Just Height and Weight
"Is my child growing normally?" is one of the most frequent questions parents ask — and it covers two related but distinct things: physical growth (height, weight, head size) and developmental milestones (motor skills, language, social-emotional progress). A proper assessment looks at both.
How Is Physical Growth Tracked?
Height, weight, and (in younger children) head circumference are plotted on standardized growth charts at every visit. What matters most isn't a single measurement but the trend over time — a child steadily following their own growth curve is usually reassuring, even if that curve sits on a lower percentile, while a curve that flattens or crosses percentiles unexpectedly is worth a closer look.
What Developmental Milestones Are Checked?
- Gross motor: sitting, crawling, walking, running, jumping
- Fine motor: grasping, pointing, stacking blocks, drawing
- Language: babbling, first words, two-word phrases, sentences
- Social-emotional: smiling responsively, stranger awareness, play with others, following simple instructions
Milestones are checked against expected age ranges, with the understanding that there's a normal range of variation — not every child hits every milestone at exactly the same age, and that's usually fine.
When Is a Developmental Delay a Concern?
A single missed milestone rarely means much on its own. What prompts closer evaluation is a consistent pattern — missing multiple milestones for an age, losing a skill the child previously had, or a delay significant enough to be clearly outside the expected range. Early identification matters because early intervention, when needed, tends to be more effective the sooner it starts.
What Happens If a Concern Is Identified?
Depending on the specific concern, next steps might include closer monitoring with a repeat check in a few weeks, screening questionnaires completed by parents, or referral to a developmental pediatrician, therapist, or specialist for a more detailed evaluation. The goal of a general assessment is to catch concerns early and route appropriately — not to diagnose complex developmental conditions on the spot.
Growth & Development Checks in Kompally
Dr. Suchit Jogu incorporates growth and developmental screening into routine well-child visits for families across Kompally and the surrounding areas, with a low threshold for further evaluation whenever something doesn't look quite on track.
